BIG news!

I have some GREAT BIG NEWS to share! As you all know, my sister Anabelle and I have been saving money to go on a trip to Uganda to hand deliver Lego to kids. This year it was really hard to raise the money for both of us. We worked really hard and held Lego drives and sold our Lego Jewelry, but it wasn’t enough. Today, something AMAZING happened.

Kevin from Mission Viejo Transmission, where they do Girls in the Garage asked me to and Ani to stop by. When we got there he had a check for $1,000 for our trip! I was so excited because that money is just what we needed to get us to Uganda!

I LOVE Girls in the Garage. I have been going there for a few years now and the guys there are always super nice and always teach everyone really cool things about cars. The have been so supportive with Girl Scouts and my Lego adventure. They even let me have a booth at one of the Girls in the Garage events where I sold lots of items.

To everyone at Mission Viejo Transmission, Anabelle and I are so thankful for your support.

If you’d like to chip in and donate to help these two out you can do so here.

Let’s get Anabelle to Uganda!

It’s almost time to head back to Uganda with Play Well Africa to take Lego to kids in need! I can’t wait!!!!

This year, my sister Anabelle has been helping a lot. She’s helped me collect lots of Lego! She even thought of a way to raise money for her trip. Over the winter holidays, she made Lego ornaments and sold them wherever she could. I continued to sell my Lego Jewelry to raise money too. Unfortunately, we are both still pretty far from our goals to get us to Uganda.

We have a bunch of items we’ve made together. We still have our regular items, but we’ve also made hair bows, earrings, hair clips, portable tic-tac-toes, keychain holders, picture frames and more. We are hoping to sell ALL of it this weekend at a local festival, but if we don’t we will be listing it on our Etsy page.

In the meantime, please watch and share this video. Check out the tabs above and maybe buy something or make a donation. We really appreciate it….any little bit helps!

Thank you all for the support!

BRICK WALK CHALLENGE!

img_3922-1

Forget hot coals, we challenge you to walk across a path of LEGO! Oh! We wouldn’t ask you to do this for no reason, keep reading and you’ll find out about the amazing cause this supports!

lego-coal-walk

Here’s how it works:
1) Take a gallon bag and fill it with Lego
2) Spread the Lego over a 10 foot length
3) Walk across barefoot and try not to cry
4) Post a video and this text to challenge your friends!

Why would someone do this? Here in the developed world, we have so much stuff. Some of it is awesome stuff, like Lego. But we have much of it that it’s often lying around our house.

You would think the pain and aggravation of stepping on a Lego would be a universal experience, but you’d be wrong. In places like rural Uganda, many kids have no toys or learning tools at all. They have never heard of or seen Lego.

The Brick Walk Challenge is raising awareness for Play Well Africa, a grassroots nonprofit that provides used Lego and other learning tools to underprivileged families and schools in Uganda, Kenya, and Botswana. If you are nominated for the challenge, you must either accept it, make a video, and copy this post, OR donate $25 or 1 pound of Lego to Play Well Africa.

December is Lego Drive month

As you all know, I just returned from donating Lego to kids in Africa with Play Well Africa. I  also started Play Well Jewelry. Play Well Jewelry is my business, where I make Lego jewelry, and all the money goes to getting Lego to kids in Uganda. Since I’ve been back, I wanted to do something to get even more Lego to kids over there.

I had an idea to do a Lego drive at different schools to collect Lego for even more kids in Uganda. I wanted to have a Lego drive the first week of December to have kids bring in new and used Lego that we could take to Uganda. I thought it would be fun to go to the schools and give a presentation and talk about my trip, share pictures and video and tell students about the Lego drive. Play Well Africa even offered to donate a Lego Trophy to the class that had the most donated Lego!

Let me know if your school would like to hold a Lego Drive! You can reach me at playwelljewelry@gmail.com

I’m back from Africa!

First, I wanted to say THANK YOU to EVERYONE who helped me reach my goal and raise all the money I needed for my trip. It really was a dream come true and I couldn’t have done it without all of you. The trip was even better than I expected and I can’t wait to go back!

I’m back from Uganda and it was AMAZING!!!!! I went with my mom and we got to stay for 2 whole weeks! The plane ride was not so awesome. We had to take 2 flights and there was a long layover. When we got to Africa, my friend Micah took us to Kumi and we got to try new things like chicken on a stick.

We had a lot of fun and I met lots of new friends. I got to give out lots of Lego and even some of my Play Well Jewelry! Giving Lego to kids was awesome. I got to see how much it really changed the lives of the kids there in Uganda. They were all so excited to play with Lego. They built all kinds of things, like houses and planes and whatever came to mind. I could see that they were really happy and it really changed their lives. It made me feel like I am very important to the world and I could do anything I wanted to.

We also got to do some other fun things. I got to go fishing with Micah and even swim in the Nile River. We hiked to a waterfall and jumped over streams. We climbed giant rocks and saw monkeys. We tasted new foods and met lots of nice people. I can’t wait to go back!

I’ve been back a few weeks and have had some time to think about how I can make an even bigger change. I am working on a few things to help collect more Lego to take next year. I decided to keep selling my Play Well Jewelry with the money going to get even more Lego to kids in Uganda. I can’t wait to go back!

Play Well Derby!

I’m really excited for an event coming up! The Play Well Derby!!! Brain Builders is helping me put together a derby where you can build your very own car out of Legos and race it against your friends! The event is FREE with a donation of any new or used Legos. There will be certificates for everyone who participates, ribbons for the winners and patches for sale for $2.00 each. There will also be Play Well Jewelry for sale! This event is for Girl Scouts only, ages 7-12. It will be held Saturday, July 16 from 2:00-3:30.
